About Grant Black
I'm a location photographer working in the tradition of a photojournalist covering South-Western Ontario (Windsor, Essex County, Chatham-Kent, Sarnia and Lambton County) from my base in Amherstburg, Ontario, an historic town just outside Windsor and across the river from Detroit.
I was a staff photographer, chief photographer and photo editor during my newspaper career as well as a freelancer, shooting editorial assignments for major newspapers and magazines. I also shot stock and did corporate photography. I’ve participated in several book projects including: A Day in the Life of Canada, Share the Flame, The Jews in America, A Day in the Life of the NHL, Chinook Centre: A City Within a City and PhotoSensitive’s The Fuel of Life, Energy in the 21st Century. I've covered assignments in Canada, The United States, Central America and Europe.
I‘ve won my share of awards including a couple from the Society of News Design. I was named the Western Canadian News Photographer’s Association Photographer of the Year in 2001.
I’ve done scores of presentations and workshops for journalism students, community newspaper reporters and fellow professional photographers. (See the Workshops section of this web site.) I’ve also held several leadership roles in three news photographer’s organizations.
In my down time I downhill and cross country ski, ride my bicycle, canoe, camp and scuba dive.
Nice things people have said about me!
My CV (for those who suffer from insomnia).
